Member Corner: FireAvert is Innovating Home Safety and Fire Prevention with Z-Wave

Cooking-related fires are the leading cause of home fires in the United States, yet until recently, no comprehensive smart solution existed to tackle this pervasive issue. Enter FireAvert—a company dedicated to proactively preventing kitchen fires by intelligently connecting smoke detectors with stoves.

Founded by CEO Peter Thorpe, a former firefighter with over 17 years of experience, FireAvert was born out of a direct understanding of the critical need for better fire prevention solutions. “Every shift as a firefighter, we would respond to cooking fires,” Thorpe explains. “I knew there had to be a smarter, preventive way.”

FireAvert’s solution is elegantly simple in concept but sophisticated in execution. The device plugs discreetly behind a stove and listens for the sound of a smoke detector. Upon detecting an alarm, FireAvert automatically shuts off the stove, preventing a potential fire before flames can even ignite. FireAvert’s clients, including major apartment management companies and property owners across North America, Australia, and Europe, have already recognized the significant safety and financial benefits of the technology.

With the recent addition of Z-Wave connectivity, FireAvert’s solution can now easily integrate into existing property management platforms, such as the popular iApartments platform. This integration enables seamless monitoring, real-time notifications to property managers and residents when stove-related incidents occur, and allows remote management capabilities to mitigate risks proactively. Z-Wave connectivity significantly enhances FireAvert’s offering, adding deeper insights, improved communication, and advanced preventative measures for property managers.

Thorpe emphasizes the complementary role Z-Wave plays in FireAvert’s business. “Being part of the Z-Wave Alliance validates our product, providing credibility and opening doors to valuable partnerships.”

FireAvert CTO Larsen Webb highlights the community aspect of Z-Wave membership, stating, “Connecting with other Z-Wave members at events like ISC West has been encouraging and insightful. Our goal is to complement existing smart home devices, enhancing overall safety and convenience.”

In addition to immediate fire prevention, FireAvert leverages advanced machine learning to provide comprehensive analytics on resident cooking behaviors. This data helps property managers identify high-risk units, predict potential fire incidents, and proactively intervene with targeted education and additional safety measures. These analytics also offer valuable insights into energy usage, enabling property owners to better manage utility costs and sustainability efforts.

Looking forward, FireAvert is optimistic about broad adoption. Webb predicts, “Products like ours are becoming increasingly essential. We envision FireAvert becoming as commonplace in homes as smoke detectors, truly elevating safety standards worldwide.”
