Walking the show floor at CEDIA Expo 2026, one thing was immediately clear: the connected home has entered a new stage of maturity.
Integration was everywhere. Nearly every booth prominently displayed the platforms, partners, and technologies its products work with. Through standardized protocols, APIs, drivers and other integration methods, the industry is delivering more ways than ever for products and systems to work together.
This progress reinforces something we have believed at the Z-Wave Alliance for a long time: the more connected the home becomes, the more important the connectivity foundation becomes.
A Strong Z-Wave Presence Across the Show Floor
The secure, reliable, and interoperable foundation the industry relies on was well represented at CEDIA Expo 2026.
Eleven Z-Wave Alliance member companies exhibited this year: Airzone, Alarm.com, Alfred International, LifeSmart, Johnson Controls, Ring, RYSE, Samsung/SmartThings, Schlage, Shelly and URC. Across the show floor, Z-Wave technology was represented in solutions spanning security, access control, HVAC, shading, automation and whole-home control.
Among the Z-Wave products and solutions on display:
- Airzone showcased Aidoo Z-Wave, bringing bi-directional Z-Wave control to HVAC systems and enabling integration of inverter and VRF units into connected home environments.
- Alfred International featured its smart lock portfolio with Z-Wave 800 Series and Z-Wave Long Range connectivity, extending secure connected access with greater range and flexibility for professional installations.
- Shelly showcased its growing Shelly Wave portfolio of Z-Wave devices, designed to bring lighting, power and other building functions into the Z-Wave ecosystem.
- RYSE demonstrated its Z-Wave-enabled smart shade solutions, bringing automated window coverings into broader connected home systems.
- Schlage highlighted Z-Wave enabled smart lock solutions across their Schlage Connect line, showcasing interoperability and compatibility with the leading industry ecosystems.
- Alarm.com, Johnson Controls, Ring, Samsung/SmartThings, LifeSmart and URC further demonstrated Z-Wave’s role across professionally installed security, access, automation and whole-home ecosystems.
What stood out was not any single device, but the breadth of the Z-Wave ecosystem represented across CEDIA Expo. From locks and shades to HVAC, security and whole-home automation, Z-Wave continues to provide a common connectivity layer that enables products from different manufacturers to work together securely and reliably.
Integration Is Growing, but Connectivity Still Matters
For professional integrators, getting different products and platforms to work together has historically required considerable effort. Drivers need to be developed and maintained. APIs change. Integrations need to be tested. Products still need a dependable way to communicate.
This is where established connectivity technologies such as Z-Wave continue to play a critical role.
For more than two decades, Z-Wave has been purpose-built for the connected home, with interoperability, security and reliability built into the standard and reinforced through mandatory product certification.
To professional integrators, this means the lock, sensor, thermostat, shade or other device at the edge of the network is built around a common application framework designed to support and encourage multi-vendor interoperability. With Z-Wave operating in the Sub-GHz spectrum, devices avoid the increasingly crowded 2.4 GHz environment used by many other wireless technologies.
The industry’s growing focus on integration does not diminish the need for protocols like Z-Wave. It makes a proven connectivity layer even more valuable.
AI Raises the Stakes for Reliable Device Data
Unsurprisingly, AI was another major conversation at CEDIA Expo.
AI is already accelerating software development, helping companies introduce new functionality and allowing integrators to configure and support increasingly sophisticated systems more efficiently.
An interesting consequence is that as software becomes faster to develop, we’re also seeing renewed attention on hardware as a point of differentiation. Form factors, industrial design, finishes and devices designed either to stand out beautifully or disappear completely into the home are becoming increasingly important again. With that in mind, there’s another side to the AI conversation worth exploring.
AI in the smart home is only as intelligent as the information feeding it.
An intelligent system can make decisions about security, energy, comfort, lighting or occupancy only when it receives accurate and timely information from the physical devices throughout the property. That makes reliable device connectivity foundational to the AI-enabled home.
Z-Wave sensors and devices provide the real-world inputs that intelligent systems can act upon. As automation becomes more predictive and contextual, dependable communication between those edge devices and the systems interpreting their data becomes more important, not less.
Security Must Be Part of That Foundation
CEDIA Expo also reinforced the industry’s growing attention to cybersecurity.
As connected homes become more sophisticated, the security of every device added to the network comes under scrutiny. This is particularly important for professional integrators serving customers who expect both convenience and privacy from their connected environments.
Z-Wave addresses security at the protocol and certification level. The mandatory Security 2 (S2) framework, including AES-128 encryption and authenticated key exchange, establishes consistent security requirements for certified Z-Wave products rather than leaving security solely to individual manufacturers.
For the professional channel, “proven” means more than just reliable communication. It also means a technology with established security requirements, certification and an ecosystem that has been tested in real-world installations for decades.
Building What Comes Next
CEDIA Expo 2026 showed an industry moving quickly toward more intelligent, integrated and responsive environments. That future is exciting, but it cannot be built from the application layer alone.
Behind every AI engine, automation platform and beautifully designed interface are physical devices that must communicate securely and reliably, day after day.
The smarter we make the connected home, the stronger that underlying foundation needs to be.
That is where Z-Wave has spent more than two decades delivering, and where I believe it will continue to play an essential role in what comes next.
