Most of you probably know that researches, analysts, planners, strategists, journalists have used 2020 as the point of the future. Ten to twenty years ago, we predicted exploding growth in the smart home and IoT broadly. Even just five years prior, we were looking at what “the road to 2020” for adoption and mainstream acceptance of connected living.
Well, we are here. We are less than six months away from the hyper-connected and tech-savvy world many predicted or hinted at. 2020 is coming fast – but where are we on those predictions? Right now, journalists and analysts are writing furiously trying to build out their outlook into 2030 and even 2050. But what’s useful before going further into the future is to see how right we were with our 2020 projections. Where did we fall short? Where did we succeed? What happened that was surprising?
That’s why we’re doing a mid-year survey of our readership to see what you think. Where is the smart home market going and what are the barriers? How far off were we in our vision for 2020 and connected living?

Understanding the Latest Updates
In July, the Alliance announced the latest Z-Wave Plus V2 Certification program. We thought it would be helpful to break down the details: what exactly is Z-Wave Plus V2 Certification and why is it important’?
Much like the original Z-Wave Plus certification program, which was introduced in 2013 for devices built on the Z-Wave 500 Series, the V2 certification program is an update that corresponds to devices on the new Z-Wave 700 platform. The new V2 certification program requires all devices using the 700 platform to support Z-Wave SmartStart, a new setup feature designed to bring plug and play to the consumer smart home.
What is SmartStart? Z-Wave hubs/gateways that are SmartStart enabled are able to recognize any other SmartStart enabled accessory device (think door lock, sensor or light) through a quick QR code scan. This feature enables hubs to store the information of pre-paired devices which then auto-configure when installed, drastically reducing setup time and simplifying the entire process. As more devices using the Z-Wave 700 platform are released, SmartStart will become a ubiquitous feature for all Z-Wave IoT devices.
Other key features of Z-Wave Plus V2 certification include requirements for all hub/gateway devices built on Z-Wave 700 to support every device category (including all sensor types.) It also mandates that all devices submitted for certification must include the new Z-Wave security framework, known as S2, first put into place by the Alliance in April 2017. Z-Wave S2 Security is the gold standard and follows industry best practices for IoT security; Z-Wave Alliance is the first organization in the market to mandate this level of security.
Understanding the 700 Platform. Many of our members have already begun developing new Z-Wave devices built on the 700 platform. The benefits of this next-generation technology will give the Z-Wave ecosystem a competitive edge and a leadership position in AI for smart home, IoT security and device compatibility. Other features include:
- Longer Range – Devices running on the Z-Wave 700 platform benefit from increased transmission range allowing the Z-Wave network to begin expanding beyond the home and into the yard.
- Longer Lifetime – With estimates of decade long battery life on a single coin cell battery, the next-generation of Z-Wave devices can be installed in hard to reach places without the need or worry of replacing batteries frequently.
- Low development cost – With smaller batteries powering the next generation of Z-Wave devices, the physical size of those products decreases as well as requiring fewer materials to produce.
- All-new use cases – As sensors get smaller, last longer, and communicate more efficiently, the Alliance is excited to see which new use cases our members think up using the Z-Wave 700-platform.

What are the benefits available to me as a participating company in a Z-Wave Pavilion at shows like CEDIA and CES?
Besides increasing your visibility and footprint by being a part of the Pavilion, there are lots of ways to get involved with external communications efforts to help extend your reach. For larger shows, we’ll typically reach out at least a month in advance of the show to all members registered in the Pavilion and start compiling news and plans for the event, such as a new product launch or demos in your pod. We use this information to add to the Alliance press release that is distributed typically the week before the event, announcing the Alliance’s presence and member news. We’ll also use this information for sharing on social media, posting news on the Alliance website, and for the digital press kit that is shared with attending media at the show. It also helps us get a sense of what you’re showing in prep for booth tours with press at the show.

I have Z-Wave product news coming – how can the Alliance help amplify it?
If you’ve recently achieved Z-Wave certification – congratulations! We’d love to help you in promoting this achievement. We created a press release template that you can use as a baseline for talking about your product and Z-Wave certification, with a spot for a supportive quote from Z-Wave Alliance leadership. If you have your own press release, we’re happy to add it to the Alliance website and share across the social channels – we just ask that we are given at least a few days’ notice.
How do I get involved with the newsletter?
We’re always looking for members to help contribute content for our bimonthly newsletter. The next two newsletters before year-end will be September/October and November/December and we look to close content by the end of each monthly segment. For example, September/October’s content will close by the end of September, so we have time to provide back edits and finalize the piece.
Regarding content, we ask for topics that are generally relevant to IoT/smart home, and editorial in nature rather than product promotion or sales-focused. You should take a stance on an industry trend or provide information that is interesting to the Z-Wave ecosystem and audience and aim for 3-4 paragraphs. Product or company mentions are OK in moderation, but please do not make them the focal point of your piece.

On the Road: Z-Wave Fall Summit 2019
It’s that time of year again – the annual Z-Wave Fall Summit is just a few months away and we’re looking forward to another successful event in the U.S.
This year, we’re excited to host the Fall Summit in Austin, TX, home of Silicon Labs, at the W Hotel from, October 2-4, 2019.
This year’s Fall Summit keynote will be Charlie Kindel, Chief Product and Technology Officer at SnapAV. Charlie has extensive connected home experience, with a focus on creating world-class consumer and developer products, platform technologies, and partner ecosystems, and previously spent five years at Amazon, where he created, led, and grew the Alexa Smart Home division.
Charlie will guide attendees through the "5 Levels of Smart Home" where he will touch upon the vital matters at stake in today's smart home market, how leadership is the driving force for its future, and how we can all work together to enhance the "truly smart home" user experience.
As in previous events, the Summit will be made up of two separate tracks for education and speaking: The Business/Marketing track and the Developer’s Forum/Technical track. Each track will offer a different perspective on trends and education in the smart home and Z-Wave ecosystem.
We’re also hosting an exciting contest for members who register before August 15th. The famous Austin City Limits music festival will be hosted during the week of the Summit, and everyone who registers by the 15th will be put in a raffle to win hotel accommodations and tickets for two to attend the festival on October 5th and stay in the W on the 4th and 5th.

Homebuilders, new construction, and multifamily homes
provide new channels for smart home solutions

New research from Parks Associates explores the opportunity for home builders and MDUs as channels for smart home solutions, as 25% of US broadband households perceive a “move-in-ready house” would include smart home devices. Despite device ownership flattening in 2018, purchase intentions for smart home devices continue to increase, with 43% of US broadband households planning to purchase at least one device in 2019.
Among MDU residents, 19% feel that smart home devices are a very important consideration when looking for a home to rent or purchase. Having smart home devices pre-installed in the home creates an immediate opportunity to demonstrate specific value propositions in safety, energy management, and convenience. It also opens avenues for ongoing services, such as tech support and data management, that are key to ensuring a positive user experience.
Companies offering smart home devices in the builder channel have the advantage of creating model homes specifically designed to demonstrate potential use cases and benefits of smart home devices, which can drive interest. Among MDU channels, properties often roll out devices across many units, exposing a large number of consumers to these products.
Low consumer awareness and low perceived product value remain significant problems for the smart home industry. Insufficient information about smart home products often lead to purchase avoidance. These channels help introduce many new consumers to smart home products.
Additional research highlights from the firm include:
- 43% of US broadband households intend to purchase a smart home device in 2019,
- Among consumers who do not own or intend to purchase smart home devices, 54% do not perceive that the devices will benefit their lives.
- Nearly one-quarter of US broadband households own at least one smart home device.

Member Case Study: Retrofitting a Hotel in Italy with Z-Wave
Located in the south of Italy and nestled between ski resorts and ranches popular with tourists, lays the Hotel Kiris. The hotel features 90 guest rooms, an outdoor swimming pool and tennis courts, and offers a place for those enjoying the local recreation to rest and retreat. After seeing continued growth, hotel management began to notice an increase in energy consumption that was having a big impact on the hotel’s profitability and bottom-line.
Hotel management reached out to Z-Wave integrator Vemar s.a.s., to leverage systems integration and make recommendations on how they could modernize their electrical systems using smart technology to help save money and bring modern conveniences to entice guests. They also needed a solution that would offer minimum disruption to guests booked during the project.
After analyzing the hotel’s needs and problems, Marco Piscopia, technical director and electronic engineer for Vemar and his team decided on replacing lighting with LED lighting and replacing all door locks with RFID door locks featuring smart sensors, an RFID energy saver, and providing each room with a Z-Wave energy meter, as well as installing a security video system. The system was set up using a Razberry Pi with Z-Wave as a controller to manage the entire network, giving the Vemar team the ability to also manage the IP network infrastructure using MARGAY, their proprietary framework for virtualization, VPN and cybersecurity services.
Prior to the Vemar installation, the hotel was using an outdated standard lock-and-key model for guest rooms. The new RFID readers featured sensors that when inserted into the room slot, sends a command to the Z-Wave relays to notify the system of a guest’s entry or departure of the room, allowing management to easily see which guests have entered or exited their rooms, and easily turn off electricity to increase energy savings.
The use of Z-Wave relays also made it possible to automate the guest building using an energy management switch by Widom, installed in each electrical wallboard of the rooms. When a guest inserts their room card into the slot, the lights will automatically turn on in the room to greet them. Or when they leave, power will turn off. This automation further helps with overall energy management.
By upgrading to new RFID badges in combination with automated Z-Wave system, hotel management can monitor electrical consumption of all the rooms and switch ON/OFF power supply to a single room from wherever they are, and using a mesh network has helped ensure that the system runs smoothly and without interruption.
The use of Z-Wave also made it possible to easily scale the system in the future. The system now has a basic infrastructure in which they can easily and quickly add new functionalities such as automatic climate control, presence control, and others. These could be done at any time, in any order, by completely customizing as a customer’s needs change.
The entire installation project was conducted with minimal disruption to guests already staying in the building. In some cases, upgrades in rooms were made during a one-hour window as guests enjoyed a match on the tennis courts.
Hotel Kiris’ owner said of the project, “We were considering ways to renew our buildings and contain energy consumption. All of them found were in economically complex and difficult to execute. Looking at simplicity of operation with which room upgrades and all other activities have been performed without interfering with hotel services, the question is: why didn’t we do this before?”
