Z-Wave Smart Home Device Adoption Grows in 2016; FIBARO Joins the Alliance Board of Directors

The Z-Wave Alliance welcomes FIBARO to its Principal Level Membership & Board and announces year-end ecosystem milestones

FREMONT, CA– December 21, 2016 at 9 AM EST – The Z-Wave Alliance, an open consortium of leading global companies deploying the Z-Wave smart home standard, announces global IoT manufacturer FIBARO has become a Principal Member and joined the Alliance’s Board of Directors. FIBARO joins industry-leading board members ADT, FAKRO, Ingersoll-Rand, Jasco Products, LG Uplus, Nortek Security & Control, SmartThings, and Sigma Designs.

An early adopter of Z-Wave technology, FIBARO manufactures residential IoT solutions and designs fibaroand is known for their unique take on traditional connected products. Fibaro creates peripheral devices such as flood and motion sensors and controllers as well as a central hub that make up the advanced home intelligence platform known as the FIBARO System.

“Z-Wave is the leading smart home technology, with benefits including interoperability, reliability, security and diversity which have all helped us build a global smart home business,” said Michał Rodziewicz, Sales Director of FIBARO and Alliance Board Member. “We are committed to the advancement of the protocol and we’re looking forward to contributing to the Alliance’s leadership.”

“We’re pleased to welcome FIBARO to the Z-Wave Alliance Board of Directors,” said Mitchell Klein, Executive Director. “FIBARO has long supported the Z-Wave network with its global smart home solutions and we are excited for the ideas that they will bring to the table as part of our leadership team.”

The Alliance membership is now over 450 global members with 1700 certified devices. To date, 70 million Z-Wave IoT products have shipped into the market, representing a $3.28B business worldwide.chart-spike

With a year of increased adoption across the smart home industry, leading telcos such as Korea based KT as well as market innovators such as Control4, LiftMaster and Nokia have joined the Z-Wave Alliance ranks to support the Z-Wave platform. Members like Liftmaster and Control4 represent an increase in vertical momentum in the pro installer market; Liftmaster will manufacture a Z-Wave controller to add to its connected garage door line and Control4 has added Z-Wave functionality to its EA series controllers. Z-Wave has partnered with international telcos like KT to support regional deployments of Z-Wave in smart home applications across the globe.

According to Parks Associates, nearly 20% of U.S. broadband households own a smart home device (smart thermostats, networked cameras, smart video doorbells, smart door locks, smart lighting devices, or smart home central controllers) and by 2025, 66% of U.S. broadband households will have a smart home product.

“Ownership of smart home devices continues to increase, with some products passing 10% penetration in broadband households,” said Stuart Sikes, President, Parks Associates. “Major technology providers including those using Z-Wave like Samsung and Honeywell, as well as tech giants like Amazon and Google, along with others are experiencing strong sales of smart home products, adding to awareness and excitement of this category.”

The Z-Wave Alliance has also announced a new security mandate for all certified devices beginning in April 2017 – continuing to ensure that Z-Wave is the most secure connected home platform for consumers to adopt with confidence.

“Z-Wave has over 10 years under its belt in building a powerful and secure mesh network for the smart home and our success and growth is attributed to that diligent work,” added Klein, “Our goals for 2017 include providing a strong framework for smart home at retail, evangelizing our IoT security leadership, welcoming the next generation of Z-Wave devices to the market and securing partnerships to ensure Z-Wave devices can work across platforms.”
